As a community of learners, we have adopted the Common Core Standards for ELA and MATHEMEATICS.
Coral Academy of Science has a defined rigorous curriculum for our K-5 students. Our reading program uses Harcourt StoryTown as the core. StoryTown is a research-based, developmental reading and language arts program for kindergarten through fifth grade. The foundation of the program is its high-quality children’s literature, as well as informational texts.
Through the Student Editions, Students are exposed to a variety of genres. StoryTown reflects current, confirmed research and prioritizes and sequences essential skills and strategies into a clear, organized model for instruction.
StoryTown features an organized, direct approach to teaching reading. The program emphasizes explicit, systematic instruction in the areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and writing.
To meet the needs of all learners, the teachers use supplemental materials such as high quality novels and little readers to enrich the learning.
Our math curriculum is Saxon Math. Saxon math, is a teaching method for incremental learning of mathematics. It involves teaching a new mathematical concept expediently and constantly reviewing old concepts. Its strength is in a steady review of all previous material, which is especially important to students who struggle with retaining the math they previously learned. Differentiation is accomplished by supplementing with above and approaching materials.
Meeting our writing goals is achieved by teaching the principals of Lucy Calkins and Writers’ Workshop. This method of instruction focuses on the goal of fostering lifelong writers. It is based upon four principles; students will write about their own lives, they will use a consistent writing process, they will work in authentic ways and it will foster independence.
